Will Rollins, a greenhorn––cheechako––(chee-chock-oh) is miserable in his new Alaska life. In addition to the bully after him, he can’t seem to make any friends in school and doesn’t know a thing about dogsleds, riverboats, hunting, or surviving at 40 degrees below zero.
Even though he doesn’t feel very brave, Will darts out alone onto rampaging-river ice to rescue a stranded dog. His bravery wins him a valuable, trained sled dog, Blackie, and a new human friend as well, an Alaskan Indian boy named Elias.
It’s Elias who challenges and inspires the cheechako to become a rugged outdoorsman and a real Alaskan. Will starts out by feeding, harnessing and then driving a sled dog team. He learns to throw a hatchet–and hit what he aims at! He learns to snowshoe and stay alive in the cold, to challenge his fears and to push on when everything he wants to do is quit. Best of all, he learns to be a good friend.
But when a fierce, Siberian blizzard rampages across central Alaska, stranding Will's family, nearly burying their log cabin in wind-blown snow drifts,it will be up to Will and Blackie to try to make it out alive. With Elias injured and Will's family in danger of freezing, can a cheechako save them? Can he save himself?

Cheechako Cheechako Series Book 1 eBook Jonathan Thomas Stratman Reviews
Intended for youngsters, this is a great book for them and also for any adult looking for a stirring, original story with engaging, realistic characters. The protagonist is a likeable tween uprooted by his family to a wholly alien world in rural Alaska. Despite experiencing bewilderment and bullying as a cheechako (ignorant outsider), he faces dilemmas and dramatic adventures with energy, honesty and grit. As he grows aware of the strength and ability within himself, he earns new, true friends, the pride of his family, and the respect of his former bullies.
Cheechako is one of those rare books that warms your heart one moment and sends it racing the next. The main character, Will, finding himself transplanted from Boston to Alaska, has to struggle to fit in while learning to survive in his rugged new home. The adventures he experiences take you through village life, a fish camp, living through the winter on a remote Alaskan homestead and fighting to overcome every challenge that the wilderness can throw at him. The author, clearly knowledgeable about life in remote Alaska, writes convincingly and colorfully about these fascinating settings and the constant threats imposed by the environment. Finally, if your heart isn't racing as Will faces his final series of challenges, you should seek medical help!
This is a remarkable story.
I have known the author, Jonathan Stratman, for many years. We attended the same school in Alaska, and he writes from personal experience.
Although his target audience is young adults, the story will appeal kids of all ages. Jonathan's story "Float Monkeys" is next on my list. Can't wait to dive in.
I knew this series of books were meant for the young adult, but I wanted to read them before giving them to my nephews. I loved the books. I too moved to Alaska from another state and Jon did a wonderful job describing the way you were treated by the "local" kids. To be accepted was so important. The cold winters, the wonderful dogs, it was so right on.
My review is in the form of a short story. We heard about this book from
a school librarian, ordered it and a few days later my son unwrapped it
and disappeared. I went on a short business trip, came home and the book
was sticking out of my son's backpack. I asked him how he liked it and
he said is was 'really good' and confessed he stayed up 'way late' one night to complete
it. He's not a great reader, so I thought this was good and asked if I
could borrow his copy to read it myself. Sorry, dad, he says, you'll
have to buy your own copy because there are six kids in my class already
on the list. I can't wait to read it but its already got the best
recommendation I can think of from my son who does not ordinarily
read anything. Five stars, for sure.
The author wrote this book about the remote part of Alaska I called home as a book. I was a white kid in the Athabascan village but I did not have the same adventures. I was a town kid.
The story is was written for youngsters. It does tell of the difficulties of being a stranger in a strange land. It tells it in believable way but not so believable that a youngster will not believe it. There is a dramatic accomplishment at the end that is very remarkable.
Also, my grandmother, or a person that the young author must have precieved my grandmother to be is a very minor character. So how could I help but not enjoy.
I am sure I will enjoy rest of Stratman's bo
Mr. Stratman knows the Alaskan bush. His writing is imbued with bits of Alaskan knowledge that will appeal to middle schoolers and adults alike. As an Alaskan middle school teacher with 30+ years of experience, I know what appeals to young teenagers and this book should find wide acceptance in that market. I would strongly recommend it for reluctant middle school readers that love outdoor adventure. "Cheechako" could be just the book to get them "hooked on reading". Will's adventures are the stuff that many teenage boy's daydreams are made of. It will definitely find a place in my classroom library.
